Control for Lifting Bridge

Queenie BridgePeterhead Port Authority logo

This historic Lifting Bridge providing road and sea access to parts of Peterhead Harbour was saved from being scrapped when a one in a 100 years storm highlighted it as a critical infrastructure. It had previously been dismantled and its original control systems were obsolete and beyond repair.

Finesse won the contract to provide new electric motors, Variable speed drives and modern safety PLC Controls, including radio link across the water to provide operation from either side.

This involved design of:

  • Power systems with mains and back-up generator supply for dual redundant 37kW motors each capable of raising and lowering the bridge safely on their own, in storm wind loading conditions.
  • Safety control hardware and software, interlocking bridge operation with barriers and detection systems
  • Design of operator control stations
